Public Betrayal, Justice Denied.

Bruce Campbell is an accomplished researcher and progressive leader in Canada. His most recent book The Lac-Mégantic Rail Disaster Public Betrayal, Justice Denied documents how massive deregulation spurred on by NAFTA, government funding cuts and privatization of public assets led to the Lac Mégantic tragedy. The 2013 disaster killed 47 people and injured many others. It is another lesson on how tragedy follows deregulation; take, for example, the Westray mine explosion in Nova Scotia in 1982 and the 2000 Walkerton water contamination outbreak. Each of these disasters is unique, however they all resulted from government shirking its responsibilities to regulate and enforce safety and health standards.   In all these cases, corporate influence played a major role in the weakening of regulations.

Winnipeg and Manitoba are not immune to such disasters and rail disasters in particular. Trains crisscross the province, congregating in Winnipeg  and oil transportation by rail is increasing. Governments continue to deregulate,  creating more unsafe conditions.
