Canada Summer Jobs Student Position: 2021 State of the Inner City 

Background

The State of the Inner City Report is an annual community-based research collaboration led by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives Manitoba office. The State of the Inner City Report series began in 2005. We work with community partners to end poverty and income inequality in inner city Winnipeg. One of our main goals is capacity-building. 

The CCPA Manitoba convenes leaders from community-based organizations in the inner city to inquire about pressing issues and what types of research would be helpful to advance the collective goals of social, economic and environmental justice in inner city Winnipeg. Research should cover new ground, considers the root causes of systemic issues and offers constructive recommendations to move community priorities forward. Once a topic is chosen, the specific project is guided by community partners and the report makes recommendations to public policy-makers. Fundraising takes place by CCPA Manitoba to cover the costs of the research. The research is published by CCPA Manitoba and is independent, peer-reviewed and non-partisan.  

The report is made available to the public and to our communities of interest: Community-Based Organizations; government; political decision-makers; and allies. The report is used in funding applications; program development; information those who live and work in the inner city; and presented to elected officials and relevant bureaucrats.

Purpose of the position 

The State of the Inner City student researcher will support the 2021 State of the Inner City report methodology and support knowledge mobilization around last year’s report COVID-19: The Changing State of the Inner City – Supporting Community at a Time of Isolation.  

Tasks and Responsibilities

• Conduct background research and literature review on community plans in the inner city of Winnipeg
• Update the CCPA’s database of Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) involved 
• Support CBOs in a Data and Research Coordination project 

Qualifications and Skills

Research

• University student in the social sciences, urban planning or a related field
• Strong research and writing skills
• Dedication to research and advocacy toward social and economic justices with an interest in research related to urban poverty, community development and inner city issues
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills
• Good at trouble-shooting and asking for assistance or support when necessary

Analysis 

• Dedication to research and advocacy toward social and economic justice with an interest in research related to urban poverty, community development and inner-city issues
• Sensitive to issues of colonization, racism, sexism, classism, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of systemic discrimination 
• Experience living, volunteering or working in the inner city of Winnipeg

Interpersonal skills

• Non-judgemental and respectful 
• Great communicator and listener
• Dedication to maintaining confidentiality and anonymity of participants
• Responsible and reliable
• Good attention to detail and interpersonal skills

COVID and the Workplace

CCPA MB follows all public health protocols. Under present circumstances, this staff position will be required to work from home. If/when provincial and site-specific restrictions are lifted, staff are expected to work from the the CCPA Manitoba office at 583 Ellice Avenue in Winnipeg. This space is wheel-chair accessible. 

This is an eight-week position, based on 35 hours a week at $16.15 per hour. Hours worked per week and start and end date for this position are flexible.
