New Principal Investigator continues legacy of John Loxley with the Manitoba Research Alliance

Press release

Dr. Shauna MacKinnon, new Principal Investigator of the Manitoba Research Alliance.

September 21, 2020

For Immediate release (Winnipeg): The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives and the Manitoba Research Alliance (MRA) Research Committee have selected Dr. Shauna MacKinnon as the new Principal Investigator of the Manitoba Research Alliance’s Community-based Solutions to Poverty: Challenges and Possibilities $2.5 million, seven year Partnership Grant funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

Our organizations were deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Dr. John Loxley, long-standing Principal Investigator for the MRA. The MRA received four back-to-back major SSHRC research grants with Dr. Loxley’s leadership. John Loxley’s legacy lives on, as he worked very closely with Shauna MacKinnon in various ways for over two decades.

Shauna MacKinnon is an Associate Professor and Department Chair of the Department of Urban and Inner-City Studies at the University of Winnipeg. She has been a Research Associate at the CCPA since 2013, previously serving as Director of the Manitoba office from 2005 to 2013.

Dr. MacKinnon has been in a leadership role in the management and decision-making of the Manitoba Research Alliance since its inception. Dr. MacKinnon is meaningfully connected to the communities and community organizations in which she teaches and works. The strength of her relationships in the community will ensure that this work continues and additional partnerships form during the duration of this Partnership Grant.

Dr. MacKinnon is the author of Decolonizing Employment: Aboriginal Inclusion in Canada’s Labour Market (University of Manitoba Press, 2015). Her most recent book Practising Community-Based Participatory Research: Stories of Engagement, Empowerment and Mobilization (University of British Columbia Press, 2018), details stories about community-based research from past and current MRA projects. Details of this book, projects and many publications can be found on Dr. MacKinnon’s website: shaunamac.com/

CCPA and the MRA are so grateful to Dr. John Loxley for his expert leadership with the MRA for almost 20 years. The CCPA and the MRA, with Dr. Shauna MacKinnon in the position of Principal Investigator, will continue Dr. Loxley’s legacy and the important work of this unique community academic partnership.
